It was beyond Thanksgiving. It was a Friday morning in autumn in Bruce County, Ontario, Canada. Heavy traffic is pretty well non-existent here at this time of the year. There was just me and a few other folks on County Road 13. Rush hour on the Bruce!
We have many essential services open in Sauble Beach in October now, and I was headed to an appointment. I planned to head to the beach after. I knew I’d have the beach mostly to myself on that beautiful, sunny autumn day.
After my beach walk, I headed to the Sauble Falls Road. The river was quiet, calm, and beautiful. The Sauble River Marina and Lodge Resort was still open for those who want accommodations at the north end or to rent a kayak or other piece of equipment for some river touring. Bruce Peninsula Boat Tours, who normally run in the Sauble River, departed from Oliphant only this year with reduced capacity due to covid, just 15 minutes north. They closed a little early this year, but typically their fall tours up the river extend further into October.
It’s worth the drive to Sauble (even for this local) to take in the fall colours along the Sauble Falls Road. They are always exceptional at the north end of that this road where it meet the Sauble Falls Parkway, near the entrance to Sauble Beach Provincial Park.
I topped off my morning by visiting some shops, grabbing a latte and bumping into a few friends. It’s life on the Bruce, even in the middle of a pandemic. We’re masked up, socially distanced, and careful, but still enjoying our small communities in the middle of this thing.
Our need to ‘connect’ in our small-town way, remains. The combination of an opportunity to say hello and have a quick visit with a few people, after enjoying the beautiful beach and natural environment of Sauble Beach, made it a perfect morning. I went to town for an appointment, but fit in all the above.
Life on the Bruce, is pretty darn good.
Don’t hesitate to keep immersing yourself in nature, enjoy Sauble Beach or one of our other amazing Bruce County communities. Grab a coffee or food, shop or window shop and fully enjoy autumn on the Bruce!
These are just some of the spots striving to serve the community and visitors of Sauble Beach, this time of year. Find them on the Main Street, online or on social media: Laszlo's Bistro & Pizza, Amichi’s Coffee Bar, and Luscious Bakery Deli Café were all open this morning, as well as some the shops, such as It’s a Shore Thing, Jack & Jill’s Surf Shop and Unique Pieces.
